MANILA, Philippines – In a move reflecting unwavering loyalty and adherence to public service, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla submitted his courtesy resignation to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday, May 22. The resignation aligns with President Marcos’ call for a government focused solely on public service, devoid of political distractions.

“In line with your call for a government devoted solely to public service and free from politics, I respectfully tender my courtesy resignation as Secretary of Justice,” Remulla stated in his letter addressed to the President.

The letter highlighted Remulla’s recognition of the principle that Cabinet members serve at the pleasure of the President. “I offer this in recognition of the principle that all members of the Cabinet serve at the pleasure of the President, and in full support of your vision for a united and responsive administration,” he elaborated.

Despite his resignation, Remulla assured his commitment to the administration’s goals and the welfare of the Filipino people. “Whatever the outcome, I remain fully committed to the goals of your administration and to the service of the Filipino people,” the letter concluded.

In a brief interview with journalists, Remulla likened his role to that of a soldier dedicated to the service of the nation. “I’m a soldier. I serve the President. I am at his beck and call and I serve at his pleasure,” he declared. When asked about the possibility of being appointed to another position, he affirmed his readiness to take on any role, stating, “We’re willing to undertake any role.”

Defending Presidential Prerogative

Remulla also defended President Marcos’ directive requesting the courtesy resignations of Cabinet secretaries. “I think that it’s something that’s given to him as a leader of this country to have the best people he trusts to keep running the government with him,” Remulla explained. “So talaga we give him the full trust and confidence the same way he gives it to us. Kaya dapat ano kami talaga we just follow the leader and lahat kami dapat mag-comply (So we have to follow the leader and all of us should comply),” he added.

Remulla’s resignation underscores the administration’s drive to cultivate a cohesive and responsive leadership team. His decision to step down—whether accepted or not—signifies a willingness to prioritize the President’s vision and the broader goals of the Filipino people over personal or political considerations.

As the nation awaits the President’s decision on the matter, Remulla’s gesture is seen as a testament to his dedication to public service and the principles of accountability and unity.
